Service Description

The Old Barracks is the unusual building perched on an elevated site close to the bridge over the River Fertha in Cahersiveen. It is home to a permanent exhibition which recounts the building’s remarkable history and that of the local region. The building was constructed between 1870 and 1875 as a police station for the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC). Why such an imposing building? Following the Fenian Rising of 1867, the authorities wanted to protect the transatlantic telegraph cable, a valuable piece of infrastructure, which terminated at Valentia Island. This resulted in the design of a large, military-style building and its construction on a site that commanded views over the bay and Valentia Island. Today, following extensive restoration initiated by the community in the 1990s, the building houses an interactive exhibition over three storeys and an escape room experience. The Old Barracks Experience Start your journey by discovering what life was like in the barracks as a member of the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC). On the first floor, watch a short animated film about why this unusual barracks building was built here and learn about the technology behind telegraphs, the text messages of their time. Next, learn about the Fenian Rising of 1867, which began in Cahersiveen. Meet the heroes (and heroines) of the rising and take the photo-fit test to see if you can identify the Fenian fugitives. On the top floor, enjoy wonderful views of the surroundings, learn about the defensive features of the building and experience the views from the turret. Meet the architect of the barracks, Enoch Trevor Owen, and learn about the architectural style of the building. Finally, in a room dedicated to Daniel O’Connell, who was born in Cahersiveen, learn about the life, work and legacy of the man known as ‘The Liberator’ for his role in ending discrimination against Catholics.
